The first entrant with the correct answers will receive the Grand Prize, which consists of the virtual equivalent of a hearty handshake and a slap on the back. Send your entries to byrds@ebni.com. Names, handles, and E-mail addresses of winning entrants will be published unless the entrant asks that they be withheld or leaves them off the message. Please begin the subject line of your e-mail with the letters "TRIV:" Suggestions for future contests are also welcome. Current Quiz #3 & Solution to Quiz #2 Quiz #2 & Solution to Quiz #1 Quiz #1 |

This old quiz is no longer current, so please don't e-mail me your answers. It's archived here only for your amusement and edification. The answers to this quiz appear with Quiz #3 on the next page, which is the current quiz. Musical Numbers A. Add together the numbers in the title of one Byrds song and you get a number that appears in the title of another song. Hints: Both songs are about the same subject, at least partly, and both songs are on the same album. Name the two songs. B. There is a number that appears in the title of a post-Byrds song by one ex-Byrd and in the title of an album by another ex-Byrd. Name the song and the album. C. Chris Hillman produced a song by the Gosdin Brothers with a number in it. Soon after he played on a different song with the same title. Give the shared name of these two songs. For extra credit, name the song by an ex-Byrd with the same number in the title. This was a tough one! It took several months to get a correct guess, and then several more months for me to get my act together and post it here. Congratulations to Bob Kentfield (rjk@holstein.com) who is now the undisputed king of Byrds trivia. Below are the questions from the first challenge, with Bob's correct response printed afterward. Honorable mention goes to VMalatesta@aol.com, who came the closest to a correct answer after Bob. A. This duo takes its stage name from an album by the Byrds. Under their real names they sang on an album by a former Byrd. 1. Name the duo; 2. Give the names of the two musicians in it; 3. Name the former Byrd and the album on which they appear; and 4. Identify the famous relative of one of these two singers. B. Roger McGuinn has been mentioned by name in at least four songs. Name the artists and songs. A hint: I'm thinking of one song from the '60s, one from the '70s, one from the '80s, and one from the '90s. There may be others; any four songs that mention McGuinn will constitute a correct answer. No fair writing your own song just for this contest. From: bob kentfield rjk@holstein.com Subject: Trivia entry TRIV: A. 1. Sweethearts of the Rodeo. 2. Kristine Arnold, Janis Gill. 3. Roger McGuinn, Thunderbyrd 4. Vince Gill, husband of Janis B. 1. Mamas & Papas, "Creeque Alley" ("McGuinn & McGuire couldn't get no higher") 2. Bob Dylan, "You Ain't Going Nowhere" ("Pack up your tent, McGuinn") 3. Roger McGuinn, "Car Phone" ("His name is Jim McGuinn, and he's Back From Rio"). 4. David Allen Coe, "Willie, Waylon and Me" ("I've heard the Burritos out in California Could fly higher than the Byrds Roger McGuinn had a twelve-string guitar That was like nothing I had ever heard") I had in mind "Creeque Alley" from the '60s. From the '70s, I was thinking of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" (in its 1971 version) or the David Allen Coe track. From the '80s I had in mind a song by Orange Juice called "Consolation Prize" from Your Love Can't Last Forever (Polydor, 1982) ("I wore my fringe like Roger McGuinn"). From the '90s I had in mind "Train" by Uncle Tupelo from No Depression (Rockville, 1990) ("Radio was playin' Roger McGuinn/Singin' 'To each and every thing there's a time and a season.'") McGuinn must be one of the most namechecked artists around! Congratulations to Bob, and as the reunited Byrds sang, "Long Live the King."
