ByrdWatcher Trivia is a place for readers to show off their own expertise in matters ornythological. The first entrant with the correct answers will receive the Grand Prize, which consists of the virtual equivalent of a hearty handshake and a slap on the back. Send your entries to byrds@ebni.com. Names, handles, and E-mail addresses of winning entrants will be published unless the entrant asks that they be withheld or leaves them off the message. Please begin the subject line of your e-mail with the letters "TRIV:" Suggestions for future contests are also welcome.

Science, Pseudoscience, and Science Fiction

A. Science

1. This song by a former Byrd describes the process of evolution, extrapolating it into the future of humanity. Name the singer, the song, and the album it comes from.

2. This song deals with the negative consequences of a certain weapon. Name the song, its album, and the weapon in question.

3. This song salutes several heroes of the space program. Name the song and its album.

B. Pseudoscience

1. This song was inspired by a pseudoscinetific book describing some of the implications of Einstein's theories of relativity. Name the song and its album.

2. This song was inspired by a mistake in which scientific data was briefly misinterpreted. Name the song and its album, tell what the data actually revealed, and tell what Soviet scientists initially thought the data revealed.

C. Science Fiction

1. Name two Byrds songs that derive their titles from science fiction novels, and name the authors of the two novels.

2. Two ex-Byrds took part in abortive science fiction/fantasy film projects. For each description below, name the ex-Byrd and the give the title of the aborted film:

a. A story about time-travelling saucer-flying aliens who are concerned about the pollution of Earth;

b. A post-apocalyptic or parallel universe story about a tribe of environmentally friendly nomads.

3. In another film, one that was actually produced, a character modelled on an ex-Byrd discusses UFOs with some other characters. Name the film, the actor, and the Byrd model. Also name the actor who plays another Byrd-inspired character and the name of his musical model.

4. A former Byrd released a song describing the survival of an elite band after some kind of apocalypse. Name the song, its singer and its album. Also name the answer song it inspired by a friend of the singer, the answer song's singer and the answer song's album.

5. One of the Byrds' most science fictional songs was promoted with a novel publicity stunt. Name the song and its album, and briefly describe the nature of the publicity stunt.



Solution to Trivia Quiz #2

A. Add together the numbers in the title of one Byrds song and you get a number that appears in the title of another song. Hints: Both songs are about the same subject, at least partly, and both songs are on the same album. Name the two songs.

B. There is a number that appears in the title of a post-Byrds song by one ex-Byrd and in the title of an album by another ex-Byrd. Name the song and the album.

C. Chris Hillman produced a song by the Gosdin Brothers with a number in it. Soon after he played on a different song with the same title. Give the shared name of these two songs. For extra credit, name the song by an ex-Byrd with the same number in the title.
