About This Bibliography This Bibliography covers works on topics related to the Byrds, but not directly about the band or its members. The Bibliographies Chapter contains separate Bibliographies covering the Byrds, the Burritos, and the more significant band members (see the Navigation Bar); the rest are covered in a catchall for the Other Byrds. A separate Bibliography covers Music References. If a book is in print, most good bookstores can special order a copy for you with the ISBN number, which is provided. Throughout the text of ByrdWatcher you'll find notes and other citations with links to the entries in the various Bibliographies. ![]() |

Lester Bangs: "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung: A Tale of these Times, 1971." Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung (New York: Random House, 1987) at 5 -19. John Bauldie: Liner Notes to Bob Dylan, The Bootleg Series 1961-1991 (Columbia, 1991). Ken Claybaugh: "The 'Hey Joe' File." Byrds Flyte Chronicles #8 (Fall 1987) at 5 - 6. Martin Connors and Julia Furtaw, eds.: VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever 1994. (Detroit, MI: Visible Ink Press, 1994). 1532 pp. ISBN: 0-8103-9131-7. $17.95. Every movie ever released on video, reviewed and cross-referenced with panache and an obvious love for the medium. The wacky Category Index breaks down the films by theme (e.g. "Pill Poppin'," "Martyred Pop Icons," and "Dental Mayhem"), and the information on how to order every video is worth the cost of the book. Easily the best of the movie guides that have proliferated in the post-Ebert era. Jonathan Cott & Sue Clark: "Mick Jagger Interview," reprinted in The Rolling Stone Interviews, Vol. 1 (New York: Warner Paperback, 1971). Cameron Crowe: Sleeve Notes to Bob Dylan, Biograph (Columbia, 1985). Fred Dellar: "Enlightenment," Mojo #31 (June 1996) at 135 and #33 (August 1996) at 121. Pamela DesBarres: I'm With the Band: Confessions of A Groupie. (New York: Jove Books, 1988). 279 pp. ISBN: 0-515-09712-8. $4.99. Memoir of groupie non-pareil, who counts Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons among her friends. John Einarson & Richie Furay: For What It's Worth: The Story of Buffalo Springfield. (Kingston, Ontario: Quarry Press, 1997). 310 pp. ISBN: 1-55082-184-9. Second edition. Trade paperback. The Byrds figure heavily into the story of the Springfield. Einarson and Furay also paint a detailed insider's view of the L.A. rock scene of the mid '60s. You should be able to order this book from any good bookstore, but if that's not possible, Einarson is selling the book from his own website, members.tripod.com/~Buffalo_Springfield/. (Unfortunately, trying to access this site always crashes my computer, so proceed with caution.) You can also order it via e-mail from Einarson at jeinarso@mbnet.mb.ca. And you can order an autographed copy for $25 from a special page on Hans Veldhuizen's Crosby, Stills and Nash Website. Anthony Fawcett and Henry Diltz: California Rock California Sound. (Los Angeles: Reed Books, 1978). 160 pp. ISBN: 0-89169-506-0. $9.95. Chronicle of California's rock scene, including the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, but mostly about CSNY, the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and so on. Many photos by Henry Diltz. Mark Lewisohn: The Complete Beatles Chronicles. (New York: Harmony Books, 1992). 368 pp. ISBN: 0-517-58100-0. $40.00. Day by day account of the Beatles lives, from 1957 to 1970. Contains a great discography, chart information, TV and radio appearances. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum: I Want to Take You Higher: The Psychedelic Era 1965-1969. (San Francisco: Chronicle Books, 1997). 209 pp. ISBN: 0-8118-1700-8. $24.95. A beautiful coffee-table companion to the Rock Hall's 1997 exhibit covering the psychedelic era. Like the exhibit, the book focuses on the San Francisco and London scenes, so the Byrds (and Love and the Doors) don't get as much coverage as they might deserve. Still, the seminal role of the Byrds is acknowledged in several places, and within its self-imposed limits the book's coverage is excellent. Joel Selvin: Summer of Love. (New York: Penguin Books, 1994). 376 pp. ISBN: 0-525-93675-0. $22.95 in hardcover. A comprehensive look at the San Francisco music scene in the '60s in which David Crosby participated before, during, and after his tenure with the Byrds. Spotlights such Crosby chums as the Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead and the Quicksilver Messenger Service. Also contains details about Monterey Pop. Timothy White: The Nearest Faraway Place: Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys, and the Southern California Experience. (New York: Henry Holt & Co., 1994). 416 pp. ISBN: 0-8050-2266-X. $25.00 in hardcover. A well-researched history of the Beach Boys with a good overview of the Southern California music scene before the Byrds. Contains helpful information on several in the Beach Boys' scene who later played a role in the Byrds' career, like Terry Melcher and Gary Usher. Robbie Woliver: Hoot! A 25-Year History of the Greenwich Village Music Scene (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1986). 258 pp. ISBN: 0-312-10995-4. $14.95. First published in the US as Bringing It All Back Home. A Studs Terkel-styled oral history of the Village music scene. Roger McGuinn is one of the interviewees. Not much about the Byrds, but provides a good picture of the scene that McGuinn, Crosby, and Gram Parsons all took part in.
