BIBLIOGRAPHY OF MUSIC REFERENCE WORKS

About This Bibliography

This Bibliography covers Music References. The Bibliographies Chapter contains separate Bibliographies covering the Byrds, the Burritos, and the more significant band members (see the Navigation Bar); the rest are covered in a catchall for the Other Byrds. A separate Bibliography cites Related Topics. If a book is in print, most good bookstores can special order a copy for you with the ISBN number, which is provided. Throughout the text of ByrdWatcher you'll find notes and other citations with links to the entries in the various Bibliographies.

Robert Christgau:
Rock Albums of the '70s (New York: Da Capo Press, 1981). 472 pp. ISBN: 0-306-80409-3. $15.98. Pithy, funny, smart album reviews.

Robert Christgau:
Christgau's Record Guide: The '80s (New York: Pantheon, 1990). 515 pp. ISBN: 0-679-73015-X. $17.95. More pithy, funny, smart album reviews.

Mike Clifford, ed.:
The Harmony Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock (6th ed.) (New York: Harmony Books, 1988). 208 pp. ISBN: 0-517-57164-1. $30.00. A British reference with useful discographies and some of Pete Frame's wonderful rock family trees.

Anthony DeCurtis, James Henke, and Holly George-Warren, eds.:
The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll (3d. ed.) (New York: Straight Arrow Publishers, 1992). 711 pp. ISBN: 0-679-73728-6. $22.50. A comprehensive text (lots of great photos, too) with articles on all major genres (including "Folk Rock" by Paul Nelson) and most major acts (including "The Byrds" by Bud Scoppa).

Anthony DeCurtis, James Henke, and Holly George-Warren, eds.:
The Rolling Stone Album Guide (New York: Straight Arrow Publishers, 1992). 838 pp. ISBN: 0-679-73729-4. $20.00. Unlike its two worthy but flawed predecessors edited by Dave Marsh, the new edition of this definitive album guide recognizes that consistency of grading and of critical voice are important, and more importantly, that limiting reviews to material in print is foolish when the guides come out every four to nine years. A valuable resource for mainstream rock, r&b, soul and rap acts, as well as for major acts in other genres, such as country, jazz, blues and reggae.

Judie Eremo, ed.:
Country Musicians (New York: Grove Press, 1987). 151 pp. ISBN: 0-802-13003-8. $12.95. Profiles of seminal musicians in country music, from the editors of Guitar Player, Keyboard and Frets.

Pete Frame:
The Complete Rock Family Trees (New York: Omnibus Press, 1993). 60 jumbo pp. ISBN: 07119-0465-0. $24.95. This book compiles the 1979 and 1983 volumes. It's filled with Frame's beautiful, fact-packed family trees, each one a wonder of design. No serious fan of rock music should be without this fabulous book.

Brock Helander:
The Rock Who's Who: A Complete Guide to the Great Artists & Albums of 30 Years, from Rockabilly to New Wave (New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., 1982). 686 pp. ISBN: 0-02-871250-1. $25.00 in hardback. Artist profiles with discographies and release dates.

Terry Hounsome:
Rock Record (3d ed.) (New York: Facts on File, 1987). ISBN: 0-8160-1754-9. $14.95. Huge list of album releases, cross-referenced by personnel.

Marilyn Kochman, ed.:
The Big Book of Bluegrass (New York: Quill/William & Morrow, 1984). 278 pp. ISBN: 0-688-02942-6. $12.95. A loving reference on bluegrass music from the editors of Frets magazine, with instructional tips on various instruments, sheet music for traditional tunes, and profiles of major bluegrass figures, including such Byrd-related figures as Doug Dillard and Byron Berline.

Dave Marsh and John Swenson, eds.:
The New Rolling Stone Record Guide (New York: Random House/Rolling Stone Press, 1983). 648 pp. ISBN: 0-394-72107-1. $12.95. Marsh's crisp writing and insightful opinions keep the second edition of this work on the shelf, despite arbitrariness of inclusions and inconsistencies of grading among the many reviewers (both of which deficiencies are remedied in the 1992 version).

Barry McCloud, and others.
Definitive Country: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Country Music and Its Performers (New York: Perigee/Berkley Publishing Group, 1995). 1132 pp. ISBN: 0-399-52144-5. $20.00. This new book is the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference available on country music.

John Pareles and Patricia Romanowski, eds.:
The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll (New York: Rolling Stone Press/Summit Books, 1983). 617 pp. ISBN: 0-671-44071-3. $13.95. Profiles on artists and other prominent rock and r&b figures, including songwriters and producers.

Dafydd Rees and Luke Crampton:
Rock Movers & Shakers (Rev. ed.) (New York: Billboard Books, 1991). 585 pp. ISBN: 0-8230-7609-1. $19.95. Incredibly detailed compendium of facts about all major rock and r&b acts. Includes almost all releases and chart listings, organized chronologically.

Ira Robbins, ed.:
Trouser Press Record Guide (4th ed.) (New York: Collier, 1991). 763 pp. ISBN: 0-02-036361-3. $18.95. Comprehensive, informed, absolutely essential guide to alternative music. The motherlode of information and opinion about underground music of all kinds.

Irwin Stambler and Grelun Landon:
The Encyclopedia of Folk, Country & Western Music (2d ed.) (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1984). 902 pp. ISBN: 0-312-248199. $17.95. Handy reference on country and major folk acts through 1983. Could use an update.

Irwin Stambler:
The Encyclopedia of Pop, Rock & Soul (Rev. ed.) (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1989). 887 pp. ISBN: 0-312-04310-4. $19.95. Another useful musical reference from Stambler, this one on rock and r&b up to 1989.

Joel Whitburn:
Top Pop Albums 1955-1985 (Menomonee Falls, WI: Record Research, 1985). 508 pp. ISBN: 0-89820-054-7. $50.00. The definitive book of Billboard album charts.
