Except as noted, I did all work on the ByrdWatcher Site, including the research, writing, HTML writing, original graphics, and the design of the original portion of the ByrdWatcher logo. None of this would have been possible without the support and encouragement of my wife Kathy and our daughter Kate, and my brother Chris and his wife Amy. Thanks and gratitude to John Kurilec of the Euclid Business Network, Inc. for giving the ByrdWatcher site a home. Thanks also to Frank DeMita for not thinking I was nuts, and Andrew McDonald for understanding the pathology of music fandom.
I would like to acknowledge the work of several Byrdmaniax. Chrissie Oakes publishes the wonderful Byrdzine Full Circle which has run many terrific articles about the band over the past decade or so. (See Byrds Bibliography for ordering information.) Two other zines, no longer published, were also helpful: Ken Claybaugh's Byrds Flyte Chronicles and Paul Langan's Farther Along. The Cosmic American Music News was another great zine, devoted to Gram Parsons. Richard Russell's Byrdmaniax e-mail list and Byrd's Nest Website provide a wealth of online information. You should join his list if you haven't already and check out his great website. (See Internet Resources for links to Richard's site.) Steve Termeer of Columbus, Ohio runs the ReByrdth trading circle and I owe him a great debt for his assistance. (See Internet Resources for Steve's e-mail address.)
Steve introduced me to George Felton, who very graciously allowed me to post some of his great photos around the site. Thanks also to George Gimarc, author of the wonderful Punk Diary books, and to John Lawson, for letting me use pictures of their memorabilia. Thanks also to Gary Marker of the Rising Sons for letting me use the great photo of McGuinn and Taj Mahal. I'm also grateful to Paul Birch, an all-around cool guy with excellent musical taste.
I should also acknowledge the authors of several books that were invaluable: John Rogan, Bud Scoppa, Sid Griffin, Ben Fong-Torres and (of course) David Crosby all wrote helpful books about the Byrds, while reference books by Pete Frame, Ira Robbins, and Barry McCloud were useful and highly recommended. (See Byrds Bibliography and Reference Bibliography for more information about the works of these authors.) Thanks to John Einarson, author of For What It's Worth: The Buffalo Springfield Story, and to White/Boucke Publishing, the publishers of Phil Kaufman's bio, Road Mangler Deluxe, for letting me use the covers of their books. (See Bibliography of Related Topics and Gram Parsons Bibliography for more information about these two books.)
Thanks are also due to the fine people at A&M, Rounder, Sugar Hill and County Records for permission to use album covers and artwork.
Last but not least, I'd like to thank the Byrds for all the great work and for the inspiration, particularly David Crosby for submitting to the lengthy interrogation found in the ByrdWatcher Interview.
